From 2017 until February 2025, he held a joint appointment as Scientific Director and CEO (Vorstand) of the Leibniz Institute of Surface Engineering (IOM) in Leipzig, Germany, and as Professor of Applied Physics at Leipzig University. From 1992 to 2017, he worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, CA, USA, and from 1987 to 1991 at the Academy of Sciences in East Berlin, Germany—next to the Berlin Wall, which fell in 1989.
He studied physics in Wrocław (Poland), Berlin (East Germany), and Moscow (Russia, then the Soviet Union), earning his PhD from Humboldt University in Berlin in 1987.
André works in applied plasma physics and materials sciences with a focus on thin film deposition. He is the author of three books and more than 350 peer-reviewed journal articles, with over 25,000 citations. From 2014 to 2024, he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Physics, published by AIP Publishing in Melville, NY.
